AKRON RUBBERDUCKS

Canal Park

Akron, OHEst. 19977,630 seatsAA

Canal Park sits in downtown Akron on the alignment of the old Ohio & Erie Canal — the 19th-century waterway that connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River and made Akron the 'Rubber Capital of the World.' The RubberDucks carry the city's industrial history in their name. Goodyear, BF Goodrich, Firestone, and General Tire all built their empires here; the Guardians pipeline runs through a city that understands grit, craft, and comeback.

Architecture & History

Canal Park was designed by HOK Sport and opened April 11, 1997 in downtown Akron on the footprint of the old Ohio & Erie Canal — the 308-mile waterway completed in 1832 that connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River and transformed northeast Ohio into an industrial corridor. The canal's alignment runs directly beneath the park's left field line.

Akron became the 'Rubber Capital of the World' because the canal brought cheap raw material from Southern ports and enabled mass production of rubber goods. Goodyear Tire and Rubber, BF Goodrich, Firestone Tire and Rubber, and General Tire were all headquartered in Akron at their peak. The RubberDucks name, adopted in 2014, reclaims this industrial heritage with self-aware humor — the rubber duck as a symbol of the product that built a city.

The park's brick and steel design respects its downtown surroundings and the city's industrial aesthetic. The Lock 3 park and Summit Lake area adjacent to the stadium have developed into Akron's arts and events district — the pre-game neighbourhood around Canal Park reflects Akron's ongoing post-industrial reinvention.

Insider Tips

01

The One Thing

Order a Swensons Galley Boy and a Thirsty Dog beer and find a seat with the downtown skyline behind the pitcher. Swensons has been an Akron institution since 1934. Their Galley Boy double burger with two secret sauces is the most specifically Akron food at Canal Park.

02

Bertman Mustard

Bertman Original Ball Park Mustard — the Cleveland brown mustard since 1925 — is on every condiment station. It is the correct mustard for a hot dog in northeast Ohio. Use it.

03

Canal History Walk

Walk the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail before the game. The towpath runs alongside the canal's historic alignment directly past Canal Park — a 5-minute walk connects the stadium to over 100 miles of preserved historic canal infrastructure.

04

Parking Reality

Canal Park is downtown Akron with surface lots and garages on Main Street, Cedar Street, and Union Street. Metro RTA bus service reaches downtown. Most fans drive and park in the adjacent lots.

05

Best Value Seat

Third base lower grandstand — downtown skyline view, covered from afternoon sun, close to the kielbasa stand. Best overall value seat at Canal Park.
